I’ve never studied linguistics formally, but the Stanford English department had its office in a building named Margaret Jacks alongside the program in Modern Thought and Literature, which was called MTL for short perhaps even before the university hired a president carrying those initials. Some years later, I happened to catch Noam Chomsky congratulating the field of artificial intelligence for its accomplishments on Christmas Eve over YouTube; eventually he died.
